Group projects have been an integral part of the Oregon State University Extension Forestry Program since the mid 1980?s. Oregon State Extension Foresters developed a method of annually assessing needs, gathering ideas, selecting and implementing projects which involve extension educators in more than 3 counties, address statewide issues or that require large amounts of time and funds. The result has been the development of programs such as Master Woodland Manager and the Basic Forestry Short Course. The University of Minnesota is implementing the strategic and project planning process used by the Oregon State University as a means to encourage the regular development of group projects and to encourage better communication of ideas across county lines and disciplines. The following outline describes the strategic and project planning process. A. Strategic Planning (Every 3 to 5 years) 1.Issue and Audience Assessment B.Obtain an estimate of FTEs available for group projects (Annual) 1.Assess Value of Previous Years projects D.Post Meeting Activities 1.Develop Action Plans for Group Projects We believe the approach developed at the Oregon State University Extension Forestry and the University of Minnesota, Extension Service may be useful to other groups. ©copyright, 2000, Center for Forestry, University of California, Berkeley. |
