In Memoriam

Over eight days at the end of August and early September, the forestry community lost three very special family members.

Cielo Romm, the wife of Professor Jeff Romm, died unexpectedly on August 26. Cielo was a loving wife and mother, and devoted teacher in the Richmond Unified School District. Cielo had a strong interest in math education programs. Donations can be made to the Lawrence Hall of Science in her name to benefit children’s math education at: The Lawrence Hall of Science #5200; Resource Development Rm. 219; University of California; Berkeley, CA 94720-5200.

Jamie Westoby, a 2003 graduate in Resource Management, and former officer in the Forestry Club, died tragically in a car accident in Fort Bragg on August 29. Jamie had recently returned from a forestry work experience in New Zealand, and had started work with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection at the Jackson Demonstration State Forest. Donations can be made to a memorial fund set up for UC scholarships at: Jamie Westoby Memorial Scholarship; 1256 Clover Dr.; Santa Rosa, CA 95401.

Don Dahlsten, Professor of Insect Biology in the College of Natural Resources, died after a two-year battle against a rare type of skin cancer on September 3. Don was a leading expert in forest entomology, and biological control. Don also had a passion for teaching, and had recently completed a stint as Associate Dean for Student Affair in CNR where he pioneered outreach programs to urban school kids with his innovative CityBugs program. A memorial fund has been set up for outreach programs benefiting K-12 students. Checks can be sent to: the Donald Dahlsten Outreach Fund; c/o the College of Natural Resources; University of California, Berkeley; 101 Giannini Hall, #3100, Berkeley, CA 94720-3100.
