As we blast through another hard semester of schoolwork the forestry club is finding every excuse to spend time together. When we’re not traveling to Buffalo, cutting Christmas trees at Blodgett, or camping out, we’re throwing our next Beer ‘n Bean and practicing for logging sports. With all the time we spent together it’s no surprise that we have become an extremely tight knit group, all passionate about improving forestry at Berkeley. With a community of friends at our back we’ve gone through thick and thin and continue to enrich our experience as Berkeley Foresters. Everybody had a great time at the Forestry Convention in Buffalo. With help from our alumni and NorCal SAF we were able to send ten students, creating a strong presence at the student assemblies. During the convention we met students from all over, talked with a wide variety of employers, heard the latest scientific and technological developments, and caught up with some alumni over some Buffalo Wings and dessert. Though the convention kept us quite busy we still managed to sneak a visit to Niagara Falls and the Anchor Bar, home of the original Buffalo Wing. We made many friends at the hotel, sharing both beers and perspectives with students from Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, and many more. All in all it was a success, leaving continuing students eager for next year’s convention in Canada. We trained hard for the logging sports conclave and replaced our wooden makeshift chopping stands with metal competition-grade chopping stands. These two stands, along with two new axes, were a generous gift from the Westoby family in memory of Jamie, a dedicated member of last year’s team. We recently cleared a tree for climbing and hope to soon build a dock at Russell pond to practice Burling. Step by step we are coming closer to our ultimate goal of holding a competition at the Russell Reservation. This fall our Logging Sports team competed in the conclave hosted by Cal Poly at their Swanton Ranch near Santa Cruz. We pulled off a huge upset to win the first place team award! The five-person Berkeley team tallied more points than any of the Humboldt and Cal Poly eight-person squads, placing in almost every event! The team is now setting its sights on this spring’s Northwest Championship. We have our plans set to do our Christmas tree cut and campout up at Blodgett. It should be a lot of fun for the club, with the trees going on sale the week following Thanksgiving. We hope to expand upon this year’s sales by adding homemade ornaments to our new supply of hats, shirts, and pint glasses. Unfortunately we haven’t figured out how to sell our trees online, but all the classic Forestry Club merchandise is an email away at our website (http://nature.berkeley.edu/forestryclub/). Our website is also a great source for up-to-date information on what the club is doing, complete with pictures from all our latest excursions and contacts for donations or any further questions.
