Is Forestry a major at Cal? Do you train to be a park ranger? These are typical questions from students on the UC Berkeley campus when they hear that forestry is offered as a major. Little do these questioners know, there is a world of sophisticated science, research, and learning taking place within the walls of Mulford everyday. However, being part of the Forestry and Resource Management division is one of the best choices a student can make on the Berkeley campus. Participating in the forestry program, Summer Camp, weekend field trips, Forestry Club, and Beer and Beans allow students to interact with and often form lasting bonds with other students, professors, and practicing professionals. Any graduate would have to agree that this is a lifelong reward.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES IN THE PAST YEAR INCLUDED:
- Sending nineteen students to the Society of American Foresters Annual Convention in Portland, Oregon. The twenty-hour round-trip drive and the crowded hotel rooms only added bonus points to the five days of interesting lectures and stimulating talks we participated in at the convention. This fall, we are sending students to Washington, DC for SAF's 100-year anniversary convention and look forward to learning and experiencing as much as we did last year. Hopefully the profits from Timber, our annual yearbook, and the Christmas Tree Cut will allow a substantial number of students to attend.

- December's Annual Christmas Tree Cut was a huge success. Thanks to Sierra Pacific Industries, the Forestry Club thinned over two hundred small white and red firs suitable for sale. After five days in front of Mulford we sold all but a few "Charlie Brown" trees and profited enough to cover our expenses and carry the Forestry Club through another year.
- The production of Timber, the Forestry Club's annual yearbook, was a long process in the fall, but we survived and it turned out to be a success. With help from countless student photographers, authors, and comedians, the yearbook developed into an excellent memento for the students, faculty, and staff to remember this exciting year of events.
With so much activity on and off campus, it is an exciting time to be a student in forestry or resource management at Cal. We are lucky to be part of such a diverse and intellectually stimulating program and hope to see the division continue far into the future.
