Blodgett Forest Research Station4,400 acres, is in the mixed-conifer type in Eldorado County. Approximately 60% of Blodgett is managed as a long-term comparison of alternative silvicultural systems and the remainder is reserve. Over 16 UCB faculty and specialists plus post-docs, grad students, and scientists from UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz conduct an incredible variety of projects. The new Vaux Forest Education Center provides meeting facilities, overnight housing, and lab space. A part-time UC Coop. Extension Advisor and Blodgett staff conduct field tours, workshops and conferences for a wide range of groups. Whitaker Forest320 acres, is an old growth giant sequoia/mixed conifer forest in Tulare County. In 1915, Metcalf and Pratt established the oldest permanent plots in California. The Forest was heavily used by the 4-H program between 1928 and 1958. Research has included Harold Biswell's pioneering use of prescribed fire as well as the effects of air pollution on seedlings. A resource inventory was made in 1999. A current proposal with the National Park Service and USDA Forest Service is aimed at establishing portions of Redwood Mountain Grove as a long-term research and demonstration site. Russell Reservation283-acres, is an oak woodland watershed in Contra Costa County. It is used primarily for research in genetics and pathology of Monterey pine and redwood. Research is also conducted by the Department of Geology and there is a telescope and a SETI antenna array operated by the Department of Astronomy. Baker Forest and UC Summer Campform a 120-acre site in Plumas County used continuously by UC forestry since 1917. The 80-acre Baker Forest was purchased in 1948, after it was harvested, to protect the camp's water supply and for research and instruction. The site is now also used by Plumas County elementary students, SAF's Forestry Institute for Teachers, and other educational and professional groups. Howard Forest90 acres, near Willits in Mendocino County was acquired as a demonstration forest for non-industrial forest owners in the early 1930s. In 1936, 31 acres were leased to the CDF for use as a ranger station and helicopter fire suppression headquarters.rom FIT. |
