Departs from and returns to the Doubletree Hotel, Rohnert ParkTour 1 Woodland Open Spaces
This tour will focus on walking through Sonoma County's woodland open spaces with leading experts on oak taxonomy, woodland ecology, and conservation easement stewardship and monitoring. The trails range from easy to moderately difficult but promise beautiful views.Tour 2 Oaks in the urban landscape: preservation during development and management practices that promote health, safety and longevity.
This tour will focus on oak tree management in urban settings and the interface between oak woodlands and residential and agricultural development where change is rapidly occurring. The leaders include experts on oak tree disease, urban tree preservation, and land use change. A minimal amount of walking will be required at each stop.
Topics that will be address are…
- The use of ‘tree-protection’ ordinances to protect plants and animals on private land, and to regulate activities that affect individual and groups of trees during development.
- Heritage tree ordinances v. woodland ordinances
- Pros and cons of ordinances
- The use of incentives for developers
- Protecting oaks after the development is complete
Tour 3 Sudden Oak Death: Spread, Treatment, and Containment
This tour will focus on one of the most pressing disease issues for California's oak woodlands. Short walks in regional parks will reveal areas where sudden oak death has taken hold in some of Sonoma County's most treasured oak stands. The leaders will include experts on the disease, how it is spread, and what we can do about it.
