In Memoriam

On Dec. 22 we lost Henry J. Vaux who died at the age of 88 years. Hank was a national and international leader in forest economics and policy and was Dean of the School of Forestry from 1955 to 1965 - a period of rapid growth when the School was ranked top in the nation. Following his retirement in 1978 and until 1983, Hank served as Chair of the State Board of Forestry. In this capacity he provided leadership in strengthening the Board's policy-making role, guided major revisions of forest practice rules, and enhanced the role of professional foresters. Hank will always be warmly remembered as a friend and mentor. In addition to his numerous legacies, we have as small, tangible reminders his portrait in Mulford Hall, the Henry Vaux Forestry Education Center at Blodgett Forest, and the Henry Vaux Distinguished Professorship in Forest Policy.

A summary of Hank's extraordinary career can be found at http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2001/01/02_vaux.html
